Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal relaxes restriction on entry of trucks into Delhi

A senior government officer said that L-G's decision will increase the pollution levels in the city, which had come down to moderate level after taking radical steps.

As the pollution levels in the national capital has reached have moderated, the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Friday revised the timing of entry of commercial vehicles. Now, trucks can enter the city at 11 pm, an hour early than the old deadline of 12 am. The decision to lift the ban on entry of vehicle will not only affect the pollution levels in the city but also lead to traffic chaos at major junctions.

In the notification, accessed by DNA, the Lieutenant Governor amended the timing of the truck entering into the city. The decision was taken when the city is still struggling to contain the city's worst pollution in nearly 17 years. Baijal took decision contrary to the former Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung who had enhanced restrictions on entry of trucks in the city.

The Air Quality Index of Delhi on Friday was recorded at 93 mg, which is moderate, however, it requires constant monitoring to curb it from going up.

A senior government officer said that L-G's decision will increase the pollution levels in the city, which had come down to moderate level after taking radical steps.

Two days ago, the state Environment Minister Imran Hussain held a meeting with nodal officers of implementing agencies, and departments including, Public Works Department, state Transport Department, three municipal corporations, Delhi Development Authority, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and Traffic Police regarding prohibition of burning of any kind of garbage, and dust control at construction sites.

The minister reviewed action taken by various agencies and departments tasked with the responsibility of prohibition of burning in the open and prevention of dust at construction sites.

In the meeting, Delhi Traffic Police officials stated that non-destined vehicles are not being permitted to enter Delhi and are being returned on the 'U' turns at the borders.

It was also informed that action is being taken against the trucks found transporting building material uncovered, said a senior government officer.

And interestingly the Minister directed the traffic police to take action against building material suppliers, who are stocking building material on the road side and not complying with dust control norms.
