With an aim to ease out the water scarcity problem in Lutyens zone, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has set up a decentralised Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) in the area. The sewage treatment plant was inaugurated by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Saturday.

"Similar steps should also be taken by the other civic bodies for replicating such plants in their respective areas. It is the need of the hour to come forward to conserve water and aim at optimum usage of portable water in our daily lives," Baijal said while inaugrating the plant.

Appreciating the efforts being made by the NDMC to makeover and maintain the green lungs of Lutyens Zone, he said that the NDMC should keep up its momentum on the efforts to better the environment, and look after the well-being of its residents and visitors.

The NDMC has decided to install 20 STPs to conserve water, and plans to irrigate 48 per cent of New Delhi's green cover. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been reached between the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and the NDMC for implementing the plans to install twelve STPs, having a capacity of 0.93 MGD in the current fiscal year.

According to the officials, the ground water level in the Capital is depleting day by day. "The Capital should not only aim to be a smart city, but try to be at par with the global standard," he said.

The NDMC had earlier decided to construct decentralised sewage treatment plants on Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model at 10 locations in various areas of central Delhi. The decision was taken at a council meeting in 2016, chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
