After more than 100 shops were gutted and property worth crores was destroyed in a fire in the Chandni Chowk cloth market earlier this week, Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal reviewed the fire preparedness and future plans of the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) in a meeting held on Friday. The department has been handling an excessive load of fire-related incidents in the Capital since the beginning of the summer.

Stating that the DFS must strengthen itself in terms of manpower and machinery, the LG directed the department to get all vacant posts, particularly in the Operations and Communications department, filled on a priority basis.

He also directed to evolve a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for effective coordination with the Delhi Disaster Management Authority and the Delhi Police, clearly delineating their tasks and responsibilities in case of an incident.

LG Baijal stressed upon the need for an annual schedule to procure required items and for modernisation efforts. He urged the department members to play a proactive role in recommending amendments to the building by-laws as well.

“The goal must be to make DFS one of the best in the world,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
