With the number of crimes against women and missing children showing a continuous upward trend, Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal has directed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and the Delhi Police to work together and ensure the safety of vulnerable groups.

In a meeting with Chief Secretary MM Kutty and Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik on Monday, the LG directed them to constitute a Standing Committee comprising members of Delhi Police, Women and Child Development Department, and the Education Department to coordinate on issues related to women’s safety and take appropriate action.

Baijal said, “A mechanism should be evolved to enable interaction at the field level. This interaction should happen in a periodic and structured manner, with proper follow-ups.” He further directed Kutty to provide adequate number of public toilets and night shelters for women in the national Capital.

“Sufficient number of crèches and day care centres for children, particularly in resettlement areas, slums, JJ clusters, and migrant labour settlements must be provided,” he said.

Baijal also stated that the Excise Department should conduct a drive to check the menace of underage drinking in the city and take exemplary deterrent action. He directed the Delhi Police to share a list of vulnerable routes and dark spots with the agencies concerned, which will then take further corrective action.

The LG directed Kutty to ensure installation of high mast lights at dark spots and to set-up a dedicated forensic facility to deal with cases related to offences against women. He asked the Delhi Police to form a study group comprising eminent sociologists, psychologists, and experts to study and analyse the root causes of offences against women in the city, and recommend corrective action.

Baijal further directed both the Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Police to submit action taken report within one month.
