Anish Yadav, who stabbed and killed Ravi Kumar, 27, by lethal injection is also a gang-rape accused.

He was released on bail and that time, Anish meticulously stole the injection and the deadly cocktail of drugs from the general ward of AIIMS, 11 days before (December 27, 2016) the incident.

"Anish (Yadav) was involved in a case of gang rape in 2010. The incident took place in Dwarka Sector-23 and he was arrested as well. Even his wife, whom he deserted in June 2016, had filed a case of dowry against him. The case is pending trial in a city court," said a senior police officer.

Anish left nothing to chance to ensure Ravi's death. He first hired Prem Kumar, 27, a contract killer. Prem, who had a diploma in physiotherapy, knew just what dosage would paralyse Ravi and kill him. Another twist in this sordid tale is that Anish actually stole the injection and the drugs with the help of his cousin, a UP police officer.

"Anish first attempted suicide by shooting himself with his cousin's service revolver. He went with his cousin to the hospital for treatment and saw the nursing staff using sedatives on him. This is when he hatched a plan to steal the drugs," said a police officer.

It is believed that Anish stole the drugs from the fridge inside the ward where they were stored.

"Generally, such medicines are in the custody of nursing sisters. Complaints of stealing injections are unlikely to happen in our campus. I have not received any theft complaint so far and if the police register a complaint, we will provide full support in nailing the culprit," said Dr DK Sharma, medical superintendent, AIIMS.

The crime was planned to the last detail. Anish and Prem ditched their mobile phones and purchased breathing masks from a medical store in the area in order to conceal their identities. CCTV footage of the medical store shows the two standing at the counter and trying the masks. They then purchased them and set out.

Prem was caught by locals as he tried to flee after stabbing Ravi, and he even tried to mislead the police. Initially, Prem told investigators that he had carried out the killing on the directions of Ravi's brother-in-law. The police then picked up Ravi's brother-in-law, questioned him, and asked him to identify Prem, which he failed to do. Technical surveillance too did not support Prem's claim. It was only after sustained interrogation he revealed Anish's name.

Delhi cops say that they were puzzled when they got to know that someone had been murdered with an injection.

The crime

Bank cashier Ravi Kumar, 27, was stabbed on Saturday as he finished work at the Kotak Mahindra Bank in North Delhi's Sadar Bazar area. Kumar was brutally stabbed to death by Anish Yadav and Prem Kumar. The weapon was not the usual dagger but a needle, an injection — carrying Midazolam and Fortwin Phenergan — a dangerous combination of drugs if injected in high dosage. Though Kumar was taken to the hospital, he died there on Sunday.
