Ahead of Diwali, the North Municipal Corporation Delhi announced on Tuesday that it will start replacing conventional streetlights with LEDs this September.

Of the 2.05 lakh lights in two zones of North MCD — Rohini and Narela — contract has been given for 1.15 lakh fixtures. Tenders for about 90 lakh lighting fixtures in the rest of the four zones — City, Civil Lines, Sadar-Paharganj, and Karol Bagh — have been received and scrutinised.

The manufacturers were given special instructions regarding the design and durability of the products, which need to have a life span of a minimum 7 years. It took about 2.5 months to develop the high-efficiency LEDs, which meet all testing standards. The south and east civic bodies are also planning to replace conventional streetlights with LEDs soon.

North MCD Standing Committee Chairman Tilak Raj Kataria said: “The agency awarded with the job would ensure minimum 64.4 per cent energy saving. Of that, the agency would claim revenue made on account of 79 per cent or actual of the minimum guaranteed energy savings, whichever is higher. The remaining 21 per cent revenue, to the tune of Rs 14 crore annually, would go to north corporation for 7 years.”

He added, “Apart from this, recurring maintenance charges of approximately Rs 24 crore being paid to discoms, Rs 7 crore and Rs 3 crore would be saved annually, for the maintenance and the replacement of semi-high mast lights, respectively. That means nearly Rs 50 crore per annum and Rs 350 c rore in 7 years would be saved, while people get a world-class streetlighting system.”

Without making any capital investment on the project, the North MCD will save up to 9 crore energy units annually, while ensuring reduction of carbon footprint. Also, for better functionality of streetlighting and its control, the Central Control Monitoring systems will be installed zone wise.
