The landfill issue of Sector 123 Noida is getting uglier each day, as the arrested agitating residents have gone on an indefinite hunger strike inside the Laksar jail. The residents of the adjoining areas boycotted the meeting with the district magistrate and the SSP of Gautam Budh Nagar on Thursday alleging that the authorities force them to agree to their terms before starting any negotiation talks.

According to the District Magistrate, BN Singh, law and order is their primary concern right now. He stated that if the residents have issues, they should move to either the National Green Tribunal (NGT) or the court but should not intervene in the work of the statutory body. However, the document shown by the residents clearly states that they can complain to the authority if they feel that that the site is not suitable for the construction of the landfill.

According to the Master Plan-2031 of Noida, a recreational green area is proposed at the site where the authority is constructing a dump yard, and the residents are saying that they won't let the authorities violate the rules.

Talking to DNA about the dump yard, a resident of sector 121 said, "Our sector is at a distance of 175.25 metres from the dump yard and as per the rules it should be at a minimum distance of 200 metres. We will try our level best to stop it by resorting to peaceful protest."

Residents further complained about the notices that have been issued to them asking them to sign an undertaking to maintain peace in the wake of opposition to the dump yard construction.

RS Yadav, senior project engineer, Noida Authority told DNA that the local leaders are spreading rumours among the residents about the dump yard and said, "We have modern technology that would not make it a filthy landfill like Ghazipur or Okhla."

Of the 26 arrested people, 12 have gone on hunger strike to fight against them from within the jail. The locals also took a silent candlelight march on Thursday evening to their resentment towards the landfill construction.
