Roop Prakash, a labourer who lost his leg after he jumped to save himself during a major fire in Bawana Industrial Area, has returned back to his village at Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. Family members of Prakash said that he feared losing his other leg and hence decided to return. Meanwhile, fire officials stated that there is a marginal rise in the number of people applying for no-objection certificates for fire safety in factories.

Four persons lost their lives in a fire in Outer Delhi's Sultanpuri area on Monday taking us back to when 17 people were gutted in a fire which broke out at a cracker factory unit in Bawana on January 20.

While some labourers who were injured in the factory have returned to their villages there are some who are working under harsh conditions for a livelihood. "We had to join work because we do not have any option. As much as we grieve losing the ones we loved we also need money to feed our stomachs. The working conditions and the environment at most of the places are same but the only change is that labourers are more aware now," said one of the labourers who worked at a plastic factory in Bawana.

Prakash lost three of his family members including his real brother in the fire but the fear of losing another life has taken him back to his village in Unnao. "His parents are old and he has gone back. Prakash had developed fear and he could not continue working here. He thought his life would worsen and he went back," said his relative who resides in Delhi.

Meanwhile, fire officials said that they receive some applications online for fire NOC's but the number is nothing great compared to the number of factories that are present there. "Bawana has thousands of factories but the number of applications received is very less compared to the number. Even in Sultanpuri, the factory was illegally functioning without a valid fire NOC," said Atul Garg, Fire Chief.
