L-G wants SDMC to identify parking space

Lieutanant Governor Anil Baijal on Saturday directed the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to explore the feasibility of construction of three parking lots on identified sites in the peripheral areas of Nizamuddin Basti.

He also conducted an on-site inspection to resolve the issues of traffic congestion and lack of parking facilities around Humayun's Tomb on Saturday morning. He was accompanied by Commissioner, SDMC, Delhi Development Authority, and officers of the civic body, DDA, Delhi Traffic Police, Delhi Jal Board, Archaeological Survey of India, Aga Khan Trust for Culture, and community representatives from Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti among others.

Commissioner, SDMC, presented potential sites for creating multi-level parking spots in order to provide parking for visitors to the dargah. The L-G directed the urban body to prepare these plans within three weeks. The SDMC also requested permission to make arrangements for parking of 100 buses during the annual Urs festival. He stated that this will ensure smooth handling of massive crowd that visits the festival.

Baijal also instructed that the required inter-departmental co-ordination should commence immediately and that creation of additional facilities such as shelters, toilets, cooking areas also be explored to ensure its proper use. He directed that all these projects should ideally be completed by year end allow use of parking during Urs festival in January 2018.

In the pipeline

The urban body is supposed to prepare the plan within three weeks. The SDMC wants to make arrangements for parking of 100 buses during the annual Urs festival.
