Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Monday reviewed sanitation and waste management measures with the three municipal corporations in the city. The corporations told Baijal that they aim to make areas under Open Defecation Free scheme by October 2. Baijal stressed there is a need to re-engineer the design of dhalaos (community bins) in such a manner that garbage does not spill over from these sites.

The cleaning of dhalaos assumes importance after the recent incident of a portion of Ghazipur landfill that caved in in east Delhi, killing two people. He also asked the corporations to explore scaling up the compactors-model deployed in certain areas of SDMC. The L-G also re-emphasized the need to rope in RWAs and the larger community for their contribution to neighbourhood initiatives. Besides, the L-G directed all the municipal commissioners and DDA to explore the possibility of creating more multi-level stack parkings and surface parking in their areas for the smooth implementation of the government's upcoming "Parking Policy".

Also, the corporations have been asked to oversee the maintenance of municipal assets such as parks, flyovers, open gyms et cetera. Further, they should undertake regular field visits.

The Urban Development department was also directed to compile and furnish a consolidated list of assets and liabilities of the three corporations. The LG was apprised of the status of mechanical sweeping machines, trash cans, maintenance of parks and Gram Sabha lands for parks.
