With an aim to review the progress of desilting of drains in Delhi, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal chaired a meeting on Thursday. According to officials, there are 370 areas prone to water-logging in the national capital. With the arrival of monsoon, authorities have swung into action to ensure there are no vulnerable points in the city.

In the meeting, Baijal stated that all concerned with the issue should be sensitised to initiate immediate necessary action for the remaining desilting of drains. "It was directed that the drains must be properly connected to sewage lines so that there is proper discharge of water in the sewage system."

He added that the waterlogging resulted in the disruption of the normal flow of traffic besides causing a lot of inconvenience to all road users," said an official who attended the meeting.

An adequate number of functional water-pump sets have to be installed at vulnerable locations along with operating staff. Officials from various departments like the PWD and DJB have been directed to lay down a proper operating procedure for this so that there are no complaints of dysfunctional pumps or absence of authorised manpower at the time of need.

To ease out traffic jams, the Delhi Police has been instructed to increase deployment of traffic police personnel in waterlogging prone areas. Traffic police have been asked to keep its fleet of the recovery vans operational for quick action.

"In case of non-functioning of red lights due to water logging, traffic police should be urgently deployed to clear the traffic congestion at the earliest. There is a need of creating Quick Response Teams (QRTs) to handle such cases of breakdown that otherwise lead to massive snarls," Baijal said in the meeting.

A feedback mechanism whereby the public is able to send pictures of the places wherever water logging takes place is to be developed. All the local bodies have been instructed to explore the possibility of creating rain water harvesting system on the roadsides where water accumulates in large quantity, as a long-term solution for this problem.
