When Manoj Srivastava realised that the movers and packers he had hired after his transfer from Delhi to Lucknow had not delivered his household goods after a week, it dawned on him that he had been duped.

A general manager at a renowned firm, Srivastava approached the police and following a few days of investigation, the kingpin of a gang that would impersonate as a pack-and-move group was arrested.

They then fled with a truckload of household items.

The arrested accused has been identified as Lalit Sharma alias Vikas Sharma, a resident of Dhangar village, in Haryana. Senior police officers said the gang had been targeting posh areas, and later sold items to local shops in different cities.

"He searched for packing and moving services online and soon received a call from a person who introduced himself as Vikas Sharma, Executive of Gati Packers & Movers Ltd. After Sharma visited the victim, Srivastava fixed a deal to get his household items packed and moved from Delhi to Lucknow," said Chinmoy Biswal, Additional DCP (South).

However, the goods did not reach Lucknow and later, when the complainant began calling up Vikas Sharma, his number was not reachable.

Realising that he had been conned, Srivastava approached the police.

"A thorough scan of the CCTV footage revealed the license number of the tempo in which the goods had been taken, as DL-1L-X-4024. Soon, a team led by inspector Ram Singh, SHO Malviya Nagar and Head Constable Mukesh, nabbed the driver, one Ombir and the owner Sanjay who were interrogated," Biswal said.

Police also revealed that Sharma had rented the tempo that day and was arrested later from Haryana.
