In an incident straight out of a movie plot, undercover cops nabbed a kidnapper and rescued a 5-year-old child on Saturday, within 24 hours of the kidnapping, just when the accused thought that he had successfully received the ransom amount.

The child, identified as Aman, was kidnapped from his home in Shahadra by one of his neighbours, 36-year-old Asadul Islam, who had recently shifted to the locality. At the time of the incident, the child's mother, a domestic help, was at work. His father had moved to Kuwait a few months ago.

The police said Islam used to live in the same colony as Aman lived with his mother Anwary and father Ishar. During his three-month stay at Sunder Nagari, Islam befriended Aman and was able to ascertain the family's financial condition. On Thursday morning, when Aman was alone at home, Islam convinced him to come with him to his new home in Nand Nagari. According to the police, Aman's mother received a call from an unknown number on Friday.

"Islam told her that he had kidnapped the child and warned her against informing the police. He then demanded Rs 8 lakh as ransom. After negotiations, he agreed to take Rs 3 lakh," a senior police officer said.

"He then asked the mother to hire an auto-rickshaw and tell him its registration number. He directed her to leave the bag of money under the Apsara Border flyover. He said he would release Aman after receiving the money," a senior police officer said.

DCP (Shahadra) Nupur Prasad said Islam kept on changing the location to receive the money till the last moment, possibly to create confusion. "Our policemen were in the auto-rickshaw in which the money was being carried," she said.

As soon as the complainant dropped the money on the Surya Nagar side of the Apsara border, Islam appeared there to collect it.

"The undercover cops told him to stop but he fled with the moneybut was overpowered and the money was recovered. He revealed that he had kept Aman in the New Light Colony, Tahirpur. The kid was rescued following a raid," Prasad said. His wife Riksona, who was hiding the child at a deserted location, has also been arrested.
