A 21-year-old Delhi University student was kidnapped and later murdered in South West Delhi's Palam area.

Ayush Nautiyal, a final year student of Ram Lal Anand College in South Campus, was kidnapped last week and a ransom of Rs 50 lakh was demanded by the kidnappers. Nautiyal's body was found near a drain in Dwarka's sector-13 area on Wednesday.

The Delhi police have arrested a 25-year-old man named Ishtiaq Ali and are probing a romantic angle. Nautiyal and Ali supposedly met through a dating application. Police is investigating whether they were involved or Ishtiaq or his associates lured Nautiyal posing as a girl. The duo had met several times over the last 10 days before Nautiyal went missing.

"On the day Nautiyal was kidnapped, the duo had a minor argument. Ishtiaq hit him with a hammer multiple times, which led to his death," says Ajay Chaudhary, Joint CP (New Delhi).

Nautiyal went missing on March 22 and his family lodged a missing persons case with Delhi Police. Later, the kidnappers contacted his father via WhatsApp and demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh. All communication between the family and the alleged kidnappers was through WhatsApp after that. Family members say the police did not investigate the case properly.

Police checked the CCTV footage of Dwarka's sector-13, which revealed that Ishtiaq and Nautiyal had met a day prior to his kidnapping at a restaurant.

The cops tracked down Ishtiaq and found that he was a student at a fashion institute. He was taken into custody from Uttam Nagar. "Ishtiaq killed Nautiyal on March 22, but kept demanding a ransom from the family to buy time to dispose off the body," says Chaudhary.
