After five long years, Khan Market and Janpath - posh markets in Lutyen's Delhi - are finally all set to get easier to drive into with an automated parking lot for each to come up here within the next six months. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has started work on the project, which in case of Khan Market, has been delayed for over five years now.

While an underground car parking with a capacity of 800 cars is being built at Khan Market, a five-storey multi-parking lot which could house 245 cars is to come up behind LIC building at Janpath.

"Both are heavy footfall markets, particularly for international tourists. There was a need to decongest the approach roads and allow enough space for visitor parking. We have already allotted the work for both parking lots," said a senior official.

The underground facility is coming up on a plot measuring nearly 5,000 square metres at Amrita Shergill Marg.

"The L&DO has alloted the plot for the underground parking, which had been delayed because of some legal proceedings. However, we plan to complete the two lots within the next six months," the official said.

Khan Market, which has over the years turned into a food and nightlife hub, gets over 500 cars during the week and more over the weekend. The market besides shops on the ground floor has over 40 restaurants on the second floor.

It was after the traders association filed a plea in the Delhi High Court demanding a parking lot because of a surge in the number of cars visiting the place every day that the court had ordered the construction of a facility in 2011.

"There is a huge demand for parking space during daytime and office hours near LIC and Janpath Lane. Work on a piece of land behind the building, which was used as surface parking until now, has been started. A five-level overground mechanical parking will be built here," he said.

The parking lots will help create more space on roads for movement of vehicles and pedestrians, he added.
