The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has given tickets to two people who had offered him and his party accommodation during their struggling days, when they had launched the political party. Kejriwal said he has paid them back by giving them tickets for the upcoming Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections and an Assembly by-poll.

In 2014, Naren Jain, son of former Congress Member of Parliament Bhiku Ram Jain, had offered Kejriwal his house when he had resigned after his first stint as Delhi Chief Minister. Then Kejriwal was looking for a place where he could stay and host party volunteers. Though Kejriwal couldn't move into Jain's home due to some legal issues, the party has given him a municipal corporation election ticket from Chandni Chowk ward.

Harjeet Singh, 57, is another person who has gotten lucky and will fight the polls on an AAP ticket. Singh had given his 41, Hanuman Road bungalow to the AAP during its initial days. The party fought its first Assembly elections as well as the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 from this bungalow.

This central Delhi address was used by Kejriwal to file his nomination papers as a Delhi resident during the 2013 Assembly polls. Now, the party has given Singh a ticket for the Rajouri Garden Assembly by-elections, where polls will take place on April 9. The seat fell vacant after Jarnail Singh resigned as the AAP MLA to contest the recent Punjab Assembly polls.

An ardent Kejriwal supporter, Singh is believed to have charged the party nothing for using the bungalow. The party office was later shifted to East Patel Nagar.

Kejriwal was then residing at the government quarters allotted to his wife, formerly with the income tax department, at Kaushmabi in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

When he became Chief Minister for the first time, he stayed at his official residence in Tilak Lane. When he resigned, he had to vacate the residence. He then started looking for accommodation, which could serve not only as a home but also as a place where party leaders and volunteers could be hosted.

He chose 4B Flagstaff Road, in a quiet lane on Alipur Road in the Civil Lines area, belonging to Jain. The plan, however, ran into trouble after Jain's elder brother claimed it was a disputed property and threatened to approach the courts. Kejriwal then decided against moving into the house.

RETURN GIFT

Those that the AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has given tickets to include 57-year-old Harjeet Singh, who had given his 41, Hanuman Road bungalow to the AAP during its initial days, and Naren Jain, son of former Congress Member of Parliament Bhiku Ram Jain, who had offered Kejriwal his house when he had resigned after his first stint as Delhi Chief Minister.

Both will be contesting the MCD electios on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket.
