A week after elderly father of jailed gangster Manjit Mahal was gunned down in the Najafgarh area, police apprehended a juvenile, suspected to be one of the five accused, on Sunday. Cops said the 17-year-old, who has cases of robbery and attempt to murder registered against him, was released from a juvenile home just a month ago. The other four accused are still absconding.

Mahal's father Shri Kishan, 74, had stepped out of his home on January 29 to buy some vegetables when the five assailants arrived in a Scorpio car and rained bullets on him. Five bullets hit Kishan, who died on the spot.

Senior police officers said the apprehended accused is a member of a gang led by Kapil Sangwan and Jyoti alias Baba. The gang is rival to the Manjeet Mahal gang ever since Baba's brother-in-law Sunil alias Doctor was shot dead by Mahal in December 2015.

"It has come to light that the gang was also planning to kill Mahal on his way to court from the Tihar jail. In addition, they were preparing to eliminate Mahal's brother and other associates," a senior police officer said.

The juvenile accused was apprehended after a police team received information that he had been in constant touch with Baba's gang and had criminal cases registered against him. Surveillance also established that the juvenile continued to be in touch with Mahal's rival gang even after Kishan's elimination.

"On Sunday following a tip-off, the police team raided a hideout and the juvenile was nabbed from the Uttam Nagar area, where he had arrived to meet one of his associates on a stolen motorcycle. During questioning, the juvenile revealed the identity of the other four killers — Ankush alias Bhalu, Anil, Deepak Dhankar, and Deepak Maan. A manhunt is on to nab these men," a senior officer said.

The Delhi Police's Special Cell had arrested Mahal last December, for allegedly masterminding the murder of ex-MLA Bharat Singh in March 2015. Mahal is a resident of Najafgarh's Mitraon village, which has witnessed over 60 deaths in gang wars over the last two decades.
