The right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) faced a major defeat against the left-wing alliance at the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) elections 2018, days after it won, with a major lead, at the Delhi University Students' Union elections. The party even lost at the School of Social Sciences, which is otherwise considered an ABVP home ground.
However, the RSS's student wing is increasing in strength over the last three years.
The ABVP's rise has been steady since 2015, when ABVP's Saurabh Kumar Sharma managed to win the joint secretary post became the joint secretary. Coming soon after the 2014 Lok Sabha sweep of the BJP, the ABVP also managed to win 28% of the total votes that year.
The ABVP traditionally has held a stronghold in three schools – the School of Physical Sciences, the School of Life Sciences and the School of Computer and Systems Sciences. Among the discussions of the violence and chaos created by ABVP members, there was another set of discussions and praises that continued within the students' body for the first-time contestant of JNUSU polls --- Jayant Kumar, who represented Chhatra Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Attacking both the Left and Right parties, Jayant Kumar, in his speech prior to the election, had said that Left is for people who spread social fascination and kick people not in the stomach but also in the brain and Right is for saffron lovers. He got 479 votes as compared to NSUI candidate, who managed 367 votes.
