Twenty seven days after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed went missing under mysterious circumstances, the varsity student union on Friday announced the organisation of country-wide protests against Vice Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar and Delhi police for their ‘inability’ to trace Najeeb and attempts to ‘shield’ his assaulters. “JNUSU along with 13 other national student organisations including left parties, CYSS, DSU and NSUI have come together for the ‘Justice for Najeeb.’ We appeal to all democratic organisations and elected Student Unions to join hands in this united call for justice,” JNUSU president Mohit Pandey said.

Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year MSc student at JNU has been missing since October 15 following an altercation with ABVP activists on the night before at Mahi Mandvi hostel. “Both the Vice Chancellor and Delhi police are trying to shield Najeeb’s assaulters. The VC has even summoned some of the ABVP activists, but has taken no action against them yet,” said Pandey, adding that, “Students across the country will burn effigies of the Vice Chancellor tomorrow, thus marking a month since Najeeb’s disappearance.” The JNUSU alleged that the Delhi police have been making false claims of having spotted Najeeb in Bihar to hide their ‘inability’ to trace his whereabouts. “We condemn Delhi police’s gross non-seriousness and misleading media feeds in the search for Najeeb. If they know where he is, why don’t they bring him back?” asked JNUSU General Secretary Satarupa Chakraborty. The Delhi Lieutenant-Governor’s office on Tuesday claimed that Najeeb was seen in Dharbhanga, Bihar.
