Amid ongoing protest by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students against the amendments in MPhil and Ph.D. admissions following the UGC May 2016 notification, Vice Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar clarified on Thursday that the notification will not be applied to the existing MPhil students and they will be admitted to Ph.D. under the current norms.

The notification makes viva a major criterion for admission into MPhil and Ph.D. courses and also cuts down the number of seats in these courses. The students have been blocking the Varsity's administration building from February 9. "The UGC gazette notification 2016 will not affect the existing Mphil students at the Varsity. They will continue with their Ph.D. here under the current norm. However, the Ph.D. admission for those enrolling from July 2017 will be based on a number of vacancies," said Kumar during a media interaction.

However, the VC on February 13 said that Ph.D. enrollment for existing MPhil students will also be done on the basis of vacancies. Following which the students and teachers union of JNU took out a march to the Parliament on February 14 against the notification.

"Why is the VC taking a U-turn now? He should stop giving confusing statements and should have a clear position on seat cut," Mohit Pandey, President, JNU Students' Union said. The Vice Chancellor also declared that the entrance exam result will be valid for two intakes from 2017 onwards — both monsoon and winter sessions. "Those who are not be able to enroll in MPhil and Ph.D. in July 2017 despite clearing the entrance due to the lack of vacancies, can now take admission later in December, in case of availability of vacancies," Kumar said.

"The functioning of the University has come to a standstill because of a handful of agitating students aren't ready to vacate the building, even though many administration members have tried to meet them," said Kumar.

The protesting students have been demanding the VC to come and answer their queries regarding the notification. "They want me to come and hold a discussion amid shouting and sloganeering at the administrative building. That will lead us nowhere. They have to come and meet me for a healthy discussion," Kumar said.
