A day after Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) missing student Najeeb Ahmed's mother, Fatima Nafees was dragged and detained by the police, scores of Varsity students along with several activists on Monday staged a protest at Delhi Police Headquarters (PHQ).

They submitted a memorandum with Joint Commissioner RP Upadhyay urging him to take serious cognisance of the matter. "This was very unfortunate how police cracked down on students during our peaceful protest on Sunday. It was a really shameful incident when cops were manhandling women and the police showed complete insensitivity towards Najeeb's mother who was dragged and detained by the police on Sunday," the memorandum read.

"Its been 24 days since Najeeb went missing and police has failed to update his whereabouts and to communicate with the JNUSU members. We urge you to direct your cops to restrain themselves from such insensitive behavior," the memorandum added.

Meanwhile, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) also issued a notice against the police following a complaint registered with them by a girl regarding alleged groping and physical abuse by a police officer during the protest.

"The complainant's photograph which clearly shows a policeman groping her around her breast area was displayed today in the newspaper. The photograph has deeply shocked and disturbed the Commission. The blatant manner in which the said policeman has touched the girl is a matter of deep shame for the National Capital," the notice read.

The Commission asked police to explain the reason for non deployment of female officers at the time of the incident and also asked for the name and designation of the male officer visible in the newspaper clipping who is seen groping the female complainant.

Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year MSc student at JNU has been missing since October 15.
