The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration has now issued showcause notices to some of its students, including Former Students’ Union President Ashutosh Kumar, citing complaints received against them over a year ago. The students burnt the notices outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office in protest on Friday.

“A complaint dated August 25, 2015, against you has been received in Chief Proctor’s office. In the said complaint, it has been alleged that you were involved in shouting slogans in the library on August 11, 2015, at 1.15pm,” the notice read. “You are directed to appear before the Proctor on December 7, 2016, at 3 pm to explain your position in this regard,” it further read, adding that if Kumar failed to appear, it will be presumed that he has nothing to say in his defense and that he agreed with the complaint.

Defending his stance, Kumar said: “Back then, the university had decided to shut the Central library at midnight. The library usually remains open 24 hours. We had gone there just to find out the reason behind the decision.” He further said: “The administration thought of going back in time and find out complaints to target students, who have been constantly protesting against their insensitivity in handling the Najeeb case.”

Similar notices over “trivial issues” have been issued to some other students as well. “A showcause notice has been issued against me and two others, stating that we were involved in screening a documentary film at the campus,” said Former Students’ Union General Secretory Rama Naga. “A complaint dated November 6, 2015, was received against you in the Chief Proctor’s office. In the said complaint, it has been alleged that you were involved in organising and participating in the screening of documentary film Caste On The Menu Card without permission.
