The Delhi Police have registered two separate cases against the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

The first case was registered on allegations that the students had confined two rectors at the administrative block illegally while protesting against the compulsory attendance rule. The second case has been registered for blocking the way leading to the administrative block, and assembling at the location unlawfully. The JNU Student's Union (JNUSU) has been denying the allegations.

It has also been alleged that the students got into a scuffle with two rectors and some professors and assaulted them.

According to police, they got a call from the security office of the University informing them about the ruckus.

However, by the time police arrived, the matter had been settled. On Friday morning, following a written complaint from the two rectors, Rector I Chintamani Mahapatra and Rector III Rana Singh, an FIR was lodged.

"A case has been registered against illegal confinement based on the complaint. The matter is being probed. Students and other staff are being questioned," said a senior police officer.

Later in the evening, on Friday, JNUSU issued a statement saying the JNU Vice Chancellor and its top administrators have been telling fibs about the students' protest. "We reiterate the facts and emphasise the main points the V-C and his cronies are refusing to address," the union said.

"JNU students did not gherao the administrators yesterday, did not prevent any administrative official from leaving the Ad Block. Students only gathered peacefully demanding that the V-C meet students and address their concerns instead of 'shooting' arbitrary rules and disciplinary notices at them and then 'scooting'. The protest was called after the JNU V-C arbitrarily called off a scheduled meeting of the top decision-making body, the Academic Council. No attempt was made to stop the Rector, or any other administrators or teachers, from coming and going in and out of the Ad Block," added the statement.
