JNU polls: Left Unity leads in top four seats

The Left Unity, an alliance of All India Students' Association (AISA), Students' Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Students Federation (DSF), was leading on all four post of Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) as the counting was underway for the elections which took place on Friday.

Till the filing of this report, Geeta Kumari, the presidential candidate of the grand alliance was leading with 661 votes followed by RSS-backed ABVP candidate Nidhi Tripathi. The left unity was also leading at other three posts including vice president, general secretary and joint secretary, indicating another clean sweep for them this year.

According to the official figure, till 9 pm, after the counting of 2,381 votes, Geeta Kumari was leading with 661 votes, with Nidhi Tripathi of ABVP closely trailing at 568 votes. Shabana Ali from BAPSA at 491 votes was coming in third. Md Farooque Alam, who is an independent candidate, gave a good competition to others with 235 votes.

The presidential candidate of AISA, which is not a part of the alliance this time, D Raja's daughter Aparajita Raja was at the fourth position with 229 votes. Left's clear sweep was marked by chants of azadi at the campus.

Earlier on Friday, JNU voted for the student union with a voter turnout of 58.69 percentage, a drop of 0.3 per cent from last year. Of the 8,045 students registered on this year's electoral roll, 7,904 were declared valid. Of this 4,637 had cast their votes.
