The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration rejected the appeal of six students, including the Varsity's student union president Mohit Pandey, to withdraw the fine of Rs 20,000 on Wednesday. The fine had been imposed on them on June 2 in connection with the alleged 'confinement' of the Vice Chancellor and other officials in October last year.

The University's authorities had earlier also stopped the academic progress of Pandey, Vice President Amal Pullarkkat, General Secretary Satarupa Chakraborty, Joint Secretary Tabrez Hasan, Varsity student leader Umar Khalid and other student Suresh (he goes by one name) until the compliance of punishment. This means that the accused cannot access any academic facilities at the university though they continue with their studies.

"Even after repeatedly pursuing the matter with the administration, several appeals and after highlighting discrepancies in the security's report as well as clear biased signs of the enquiry committee, the administration said there will be no change in the exorbitant fine of Rs 20,000 and hostel transfer imposed on us," said JNU Student Union General Secretary Satarupa Chakraborty.

According to the JNU administration, an internal discipline committee formed by the Varsity had found these students guilty as per the rules of 'discipline and proper conduct of students of JNU'.

"They did not allow the officials to go out of the building and directed students to lie down in front the exit door of the administrative building as soon as the officials tried to come out on the night of October 19, 2016, and continued till 2 pm on October 21," JNU Chief Proctor Vibha Tandon had said earlier.

Meanwhile, students said that they will fight each and every action by the administration. "JNUSU will not compromise with its commitments and principles. This will also be fought tooth and nail," Chakraborty added.
