Even after the Delhi Police claimed that they had denied permission to hold Jignesh Mevani's 'Yuva Hunkar Rally', a stage was allowed to be erected early in the morning for the rally. The confusion within the Delhi Police force as to whether the permission should be given or not continued till Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in a tweet on Monday night clarified that "No permission has been granted".

The Special Branch of Delhi Police failed to analyse the number of people expected to turn up for the rally. As a result of which the rally had more number of policemen and fewer people present there. The police had expected a turn out of 5,000 people but only 150-200 people turned up. Post noon, the Delhi Police eased out its officers standing on the rally duty since morning and around 80 per cent of the force was removed looking at the poor turn-out of the rally.

The U-turn by the Delhi Police on Tuesday, especially after the tweet which outrightly denied permission, did not come as a shocker but looked like they were well prepared for both the scenarios.

Ajay Chaudhary, Joint Commissioner of Police, New Delhi district said,"We had a lot of discussion on the alternative sites because of the NGT order. It's a democratic country, as long as protesters are peaceful there is no reason for any confrontation."

Around 2,000 police officials were deployed for law and order arrangement around the rally area; 840 officers from the para-military forces, 600 from other districts, 350 from New Delhi district. Not just this, necessary arrangements, including the tear gas shells, water cannons were in place to make sure that no untoward incident occurred during the rally.

Meanwhile, as the rally ended, a pick-pocketer was apprehended by the police. The 16-year old boy had stolen the purse of a woman who had come to attend the rally. The police recovered the stolen purse from the boy. Few people, including journalists who had come for the rally ended up losing their mobile phones, as they had been stolen as well.

Police officials stated they are investigating the cases of stolen mobile phones.

I look at it as a youth movement in the country against the politics of hatred, lies and violence. Minorities and Dalits are being attacked and are being told to convert themselves as Hindus. The ruling party run by the BJP-RSS abuses and runs a propaganda against those whose ideologies don’t match with that of the government
Prashant Bhushan, Lawyer & politician

The government is making the corporate strong and the democracy weak. Our fight is not for a specific religion or sex but it is against the differences which still prevail in the society; we want everyone to be equal
Kanhaiya Kumar, Former JNUSU president

This ‘Break India Brigade’ is being patronised by the Congress. People have been mature to reject the rally seeing that it is a smokescreen for Congress’s divisive politics. Those who were disturbed at the hanging of a terrorist like Afzal Guru are participating in the rally. People know that it is not a Dalit rally but ‘Dal-Hit’ rally
Sambit Patra, BJP spokesperson
