Union minister Vijay Goel Tuesday demanded an inquiry into the delay in completing the Rani Jhansi Flyover project executed by the BJP-led North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).

The 1.6-km-long flyover, which was originally scheduled to be completed by 2010, was inaugurated by Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan in North Delhi.

“There should be an inquiry as to why there has been so much delay in completing the project of Rani Jhansi Flyover,” said Goel on the sidelines of the event.

While addressing a gathering at the event, the Union Parliamentary Affairs minister said that the project, whose foundation stone was laid in 2008, was to be completed in two years, but it took 10 years to complete.

“A report should be prepared (in this regard),” Goel said, adding that 43 per cent of the work was completed in the last one year, but as to why the remaining work took so much time.

Reacting to his Goel’s demand, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari said that it was a “serious matter” that needs to be investigated.

Tiwari assured that the truth will come before the people soon.

At the event, Vardhan congratulated locals for the opening of the flyover. He said that as per estimate, around 5 lakh vehicles will use this flyover everyday.

Hitting out at the AAP dispensation, Vardhan alleged that the Delhi government is creating hurdles in the development works, but the BJP workers will not allow the same.

“Today, I inaugurated the most-awaited Rani Jhansi Flyover. The 1.6-km-long flyover has been constructed with a cost of Rs 300 crore. It will cater to five lakh motorists and people will get relief from traffic congestion,” Vardhan tweeted in Hindi.

The 1.6-km-long flyover from near the St Stephens Hospital to Filmistaan Cinema was originally scheduled to be completed by 2010, but has missed several deadlines.

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri was also present. Puri said that the flyover built by the North MCD will help decongest the area and reduce pollution. Lt Governor Anil Baijal said that in the last one year, 43 per cent of the work of the flyover was completed while the remaining work was completed in eight years.

“...the flyover will ease the flow of traffic between ISBT Kashmere Gate and Karol Bagh.” Baijal tweeted later.

AAP Too Demands CBI Probe

  • The Aam Aadmi Party demanded a CBI probe into the “delay” and alleged “corruption” in the construction of the Rani Jhansi flyover that was unveiled Tuesday by Union minister Harsh Vardhan.
  • “The flyover was scheduled to be completed by 2010. The delay in its completion reflects the work commitment of the Modi government and the BJP-ruled MCD. A CBI probe must be ordered to look into the delay and the corruption in the construction of the flyover,” senior AAP leader and in-charge of North East Delhi constituency Dilip Pandey said.
