The Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Jagadesh Kumar said that the university is committed to encourage critical thinking and freedom of thought among its students and faculty on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion of JNU’s second convocation, which is being organised after a gap of 46 years, Kumar said, “The best ideas are born when minds are allowed to roam free and think critically. JNU is committed to this freedom of thought and critical thinking with an emphasis on our fundamental responsibilities.”

The V-C’s comment comes in the backdrop of the JNU Student Union’s (JNUSU) appeal to the student community to boycott the convocation, accusing him of “silencing the voice of dissent.” “JNU should strive towards advocating the voice and aspirations of 1.3 billion Indians who would like to see our country become stronger, remain inclusive and united...it should be one of the Universities our future generations may like to thank for its intellectual contributions as a fountainhead of knowledge,” Kumar said. During the event, a scholar Anoop Patel did not shake hands with the VC for “bringing a bad name to the varsity”. “The way the image of JNU has gone down, the VC has a huge role to play in it. The decisions, policies which are enacted by the V-C are against the inclusive, democratic, progressive and secular credentials of our JNU (sic),” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, the JNUSU said that administration “arbitrary” withdrew the permission for hosting an event “Save JNU Convention” at the campus on Wednesday.

The Chancellor of JNU and Niti Aayog member, VK Saraswat, was the chief guest at the event where more than 400 students were conferred with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The event was shifted out of the university to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) on Tuesday citing space constraint.
