Jamia says PhD scholar’s expulsion date a misprint

According to the earlier order, the scholar’s admission was to be cancelled on November 7, but the varsity said that it has already been cancelled and that the date printed was a typographical error.

Days after Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) cancelled the admission of a second-year PhD student for allegedly indulging in“campus activism”, the university issued another notice on Tuesday, stating that the date mentioned in the order was incorrect.

“I have received a call from my supervisor, who informed me that my admission has already been cancelled,” said Dhrupadi Ghosh, who was pursuing PhD in Sociology from JMI.

The earlier order, issued to four people, including her departmental head and her supervisor, on Friday, read: “The admission of Dhrupadi Ghosh is being cancelled from PhD in Sociology, w.e.f  November 7, 2017.”

Calling it an “undemocratic” move, Ghosh then submitted a memorandum to the administration, seeking reasons behind the “abrupt” cancellation of her admission.

“The administration has mentioned about an order dated September 7, 2017, issued by the Registrar, following which my admission was cancelled. I, however, am totally unaware about that order. I have requested the administration to provide me with details of the order at the earliest as any delay can have serious consequences on my career,” she said.

The administration, however, maintained that the decision had nothing to do with Ghosh’s activism. “It was totally based on technical grounds. Her Master’s subject was not allied with her PhD subject,” a senior varsity official said.
