Recently arrested Khalistani Liberation Force (KLF) Chief Harminder Singh Mintu told interrogators that he was in touch with an ISI-backed former Khalistani militant who has taken refuge in Pakistan.

Sources say Pakistan's ISI was backing Mintu who was trying to revive the Khalistani movement in Punjab, by establishing a strong Sikh militancy group under his leadership. He was in touch with two ISI handlers— one was in Lahore and the other in Germany.

"His Pakistan ISI handler has been identified as Harmeet alias Happy. A few days before the jail break he also had a skype conversation with Harmeet and had informed him about his plans of escaping prison and then starting a revival of the movement," said a senior police officer.

Harmeet has been an active member of the KLF and had fled to Pakistan to take shelter under the protection of the ISI. He started living in Dera Chall village at Lahore.

Harmeet played a pivotal role in Mintu's escape from jail on Sunday, as he had arranged for financial assistance that he would need during and post his escape. He had motivated their Sikh counterparts in Germany to send money via Western Union money transfer. Sources revealed that one person who has been identified, and is currently absconding, was assigned the task of giving him money.

On Sunday, the day he escaped from jail, lakhs of rupees were deposited in an account which had to be given to Mintu. The Punjab police identified the handler who was supposed to give the money to Mintu as Tajinder Sharma who owns a sweet shop by the name of Shagun Sweets near the jail. But Sharma could not match the timing and failed to give the money to Mintu. He was later arrested by Punjab police.

Sources revealed that Mintu was constantly trying to raise funds to make a comeback and start the Khalistani movement all over again. He was also getting fundings from KLF sympathizers in London who were sending him money through hawala as well.

Mintu has a well established base in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. He had visited these places several times and also created an underground network of terrorists in these countries. He lived in Malaysia with a fake passport in the name of Bakshish Singh. He was now planning to explore England and Germany as the intelligence agencies had links in the places he was at earlier and also because the Sikhs living in these areas were in synchronicity with his thoughts and beliefs.

Sources revealed that Mintu was in touch with people in Germany through social media and also used it as a base to propagate his ideology. He was in the process of making a larger underground network by using his contacts he had made from 2009-2014.
