In response to the accusation by a couple that their newborn baby boy was exchanged for a girl by the hospital staff, Safdarjung Hospital, on Wednesday, released the result of the DNA report confirming that the lady had indeed given birth to a girl.

On June 1, at 12:55 pm, Sonia, a resident of Devli Gaon in Delhi, delivered a baby girl at Safdarjung Hospital which hospital staff handed over to the couple. However, the couple refused to accept the baby alleging that their baby was a boy and left it with the hospital.

"The couple, along with some relatives, shouted at the doctors and created a scene. Despite several reassurances, they refused to accept the baby and kept demanding a baby boy," said Doctor AK Rai, Medical Superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital. "The DNA test was conducted in front of the police and the results show that the allegations levelled against the hospital were false," he added.

Meanwhile, the girl remained under the hospital care and could not be provided the initial mother-child bonding that is essential for the growth and well-being of the child.

On June 20, after the report results were shared with the family, they took the baby home. The baby by now has lost weight, and has a big wound on her left leg.

"There was some misunderstanding at our end. The mother of the baby said that she saw a baby boy and we had to go by her word since we were not there in the labour room," says Keshav Kumar, brother of the father of the child.

The couple was unavailable for comment.

"We left the baby as we did not want someone else's girl, but now the DNA has confirmed it, we have brought her home," he added.

The hospital has filed a complaint with the police in Safdarjung Enclave against the couple stating that their behaviour led to work obstruction as they created a ruckus in the labour room engaging medical staff for several hours and later left their baby at the hospital. This, the hospital alleged, had maligned their image.
