The Delhi Police have booked a 70-year-old man for throwing a household cleaning liquid over eight people, including six children and two women, in north-west Delhi’s Bharat Nagar area on Sunday afternoon.

According to the police, the incident took place around 2pm in the Shakti Nagar extension area. The accused, identified as Vinod Kumar, was enraged as the group had started a bonfire near his house.

The children — Aniket, Suresh, Sooraj, Adarsh, Kamal, and Karan — were playing nearby, while Aniket’s mother Babita and neighbour Babli were sitting around the bonfire. “The children were playing and creating a lot of noise. Kumar then asked them to play at some other spot. When the kids continued there only, he threw a bottle of phenyl over them,” police said.

Babita and Babli then rushed to save the children but the liquid fell on them as well. They all complained of a burning sensation, after which they were rushed to a nearby hospital, from where they were discharged in a few hours.

Sources said Kumar has objected to people drinking and creating a ruckus in the area in the past as well. A case under appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Bharat Nagar police station in this regard and further investigation is on.
