Interstate gang of auto-lifters busted, six cars recovered

The Delhi Police has busted a gang of interstate auto-lifters and bootleggers who were supplying illicit liquor being brought from Haryana and being sold in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Around 1600 quarters of liquor and four bottles of whisky which were only to be sold in Haryana have been recovered from them.

"The accused has been identified as Monu Phogat (27), a resident of Rohtak in Haryana.

Six stolen cars including an i-20 stolen car in which he was travelling when he was arrested was also seized," said Bhisham Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime Branch.

The police officials received an input that Phogat who supplies illicit liquor from Haryana to various parts in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in stolen cars would come Sector-16, Dwarka. A trap was laid and the accused man was intercepted and arrested.

During the search of his car four bottles of whiskey and 24 cartons containing 1,152 quarters of illicit liquor 'for sale in Haryana only' were recovered. The i-20 car was found to be stolen from Tagore Garden area and the number plate which was on the car was found to be a fake number.

It may be noted that due to strict provisions in the Delhi Excise Act seized vehicles will not be released to owners and would later be auctioned the gang members started using stolen cars to carry out the illegal trade.

Phogat told the police that he along with his associate Ravinder who hails from Bahadurgarh, Haryana started stealing cars and supplying illicit liquor. At his instance five more vehicles were also recovered.

Monu's uncle Virender Phogat was a businessman and supplied liquor in the Bakkarwala village area. Monu started working at his uncle's service station. His uncle was shot dead by rival liquor mafia in 2015 after which he took over the trade.
