Interstate cartel busted, 1205 kg poppy straw seized by Delhi Police

The accused were active in Bihar, Jharkhand, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab

Delhi Police apprehended two members of a drug cartel on Tuesday after they received information that an international drug racket smuggling poppy straw was very active in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. The two accused were going to travel via Delhi to smuggle drugs to Punjab.

According to the police, the accused have been identified as Bhim Giri (43) and Rajvinder Singh (28), both residents of Patiala, Punjab. They were caught while they were in the middle of smuggling drugs to Punjab from Outer Ring Road, near Burari flyover in Delhi. The duo was smuggling 1,205 kilograms of poppy straw from Jharkhand in a truck that belonged to Giri.

A trap was laid and the police recovered 60 sacks of poppy straw, worth approximately Rs 10 crore.

"The recovered poppy straw has been brought from Naxal affected areas of Jharkhand and was going to be transported to Punjab. After 3 months of our efforts at collecting information through technical as well as human surveillance, we could finally track these two down. Members of this cartel have been identified and their activities were kept under discreet surveillance," said Pramod Singh Kushwah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell, Delhi).

During interrogation, the accused revealed that they had brought the consignment from Chatra in Jharkhand in bags of rice and were supposed to deliver it to drug peddlers in Punjab and Haryana. They also confessed that they had been doing this for the past five years and have supplied over 80,000 kilograms poppy straws. They also revealed that Naxal hit areas of Jharkhand have been illegally cultivating opium for the last 15 years.

Giri has been working as a truck driver since 2013 and started supplying poppy straws from Jharkhand to Punjab from the last five years. His accomplice, Rajvinder Singh started working with Giri in 2014 to earn some quick money, who gets paid Rs 20,000 for each consignment.
