The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is witnessing an all-time high passenger rate, recorded to be at 57.7 million, with a growth rate of 19.2 per cent, during the fiscal year 2016-17. With this, the airport has achieved 21st rank in passenger volume, in a preliminary survey of top 30 airports, conducted by the Airports Council International in 2016.

In financial year 2010-11, the airport handled a total of 29.95 million people. The international and domestic traffic in 2016-2017 was recorded at 15.5 and 42.2 million, respectively.

This unprecedented passenger growth has, however, raised concerns about the already crowded domestic terminal of the Delhi airport, which is ready to undergo expansion.

“The airport added 9.3 million passengers in 2016-2017. The international transfers or transit constituted 23.5 per cent of the total international passengers. In terms of cargo, the airport handled a record 857,000 metric tonnes, with at a growth rate of 9 per cent from the last year,” a senior officer said.

The officer further said: “The IGIA has most recently been recognised at various forums globally. It has won several awards including SKYTRAX World Airport Award 2017 for the Best Airport in India and Central Asia, ACI-ASQ Award 2016 for 2nd best airport in the world in highest category of over 40 million passengers per annum.”

Commenting on the achievement, DIAL CEO I Prabhakara Rao said: “This is an indicator of positive growth in the aviation industry.”
