2005 Delhi serial blasts | Other cases where accused were set free

There is a long list of cases that did not stand the scrutiny of courts and the accused were set free as courts raised serious questions on investigations

It is not the first time that the Special Cell has goofed up the investigations and arrested persons without sufficient evidence. The anti-terror unit suffered another jolt after a Delhi Court acquitted two persons who were accused of carrying out the Sarojini Nagar Bomb blasts. There is a long list of cases that did not stand the scrutiny of courts and the accused were set free as courts raised serious questions on investigations.       

1) Abdul Karim Tunda: The Special Cell of Delhi Police had claimed that Tunda was the mastermind behind several blasts carried out in Delhi and other parts of the country to take revenge of the Babri Masjid demolition. The Patiala House Court had discharged him in all the four cases against him. The court stated that the Delhi Police had failed to get sufficient evidence.

2) Liaqat Shah: The National Investigating Agency (NIA) had acquitted Liaqat Shah of terror charges and given a clean chit. The NIA had pulled up the Delhi Police and even stated that the officers to the rank of a Deputy Commissioner of Police had involvement in falsely implicating the charges against Shah. The case is pending at the Honorable court.

3) Irshad Ali and Maurif Qamar - The Special Cell had arrested two of them and claimed that they were a part of the conspiracy and were carrying arms and ammunition while coming from Jammu. They were arrested in 2006 and eleven years later acquitted by a Delhi Sessions Court.

4) Mohammad Amir - Arrested by the Special Cell in 1998 and accused of carrying out 19 bombings in the National Capital. Fourteen years later was acquitted in all the cases.

5) KhurshidAhmad Bhatt- Arrested by Special Cell in 2005 and acquitted of all charges by the court in 2011.

6) Irshad Ahmed Malik- In march 2004, he was arrested by the Special Cell on charges of belonging to a Lashkar-e-Toiba (Let). The court acquitted him on charges of waging war against the state and stated that the operation of the Special Cell was surreptitious.

7) AyazAhmed Shah alias Iqbal- Arrested in 2004 by Special Cell claiming that he had come to Delhi to deliver explosives and hawala money. The court pulled up the police and stated that they took the case lightly and acquitted him of all charges.

8) Tariq Dar- Picked up in 2006 by the Special Cell, on disclosure statements of two alleged terrorists. Public Prosecutor submitted a discharge application.

9) Khongbantbum Brojen Singh- Picked up on charges of acquiring arms and ammunition for carrying out intended activities in the Delhi in 2002. Brojen was later acquitted of all charges.
