In a first of its kind endeavour, Delhi will soon have five English-medium government schools offering state-of-the art facilities to young bright students. The endeavour has been put forward by the Delhi government who is all set to inaugurate these schools in July, as soon as the summer vacation gets over.

The Capital, so far, has 1,050 Hindi-medium government schools.

The English medium schools which will be called 'Schools of Excellence' will also have 25 students in primary classes (1-6) and 40 in senior classes (6-12). The government has decided to keep the size of the classes small so that every student can get exclusive attention from teachers. "The turnout of the students will be kept less in these schools. These schools will be a demonstration and a proof of confidence for the rest of the (government) schools. Our plan is to inaugurate them in July once the vacations are over," Atishi Marlena, advisor to education minister Manish Sisodia, told DNA.

According to officials, that while government schools, at present, do have some English-medium sections they do not qualify under the category of English-medium schools. The officials added that the infrastructure is ready and the schools are well-furnished to equip the students to learn.

"Any child from any background can do just as well as the students studying in private schools," said Marlena. Sjhe added that from organising extra-curricular activities to world-class furniture.

The five schools are located at-Madanpur Khadar, Khichdipur in Patparganj, two in Rohini and one in Dwarka. Around 40-50 teachers will be hired per school. The education department will first select teachers from the existing staff and hire a few guest teachers on contractual basis.

What Experts Say

"This is one of the best initiatives taken by the Delhi government. It will enable the government schools to compete with the private schools. Most importantly, it will provide quality education to those who cannot afford private education."

"This is no doubt a good move as we need more English- medium government schools. In the absence of English- medium government schools, private schools monopolize and that makes English-medium education unaffordable for poor people. But, it is extremely important to maintain the standard of teaching. The teaching standards in even best of the private schools have declined. The government should do some serious thinking before starting the schools"

"The majority of people want to enroll their children in English medium schools and with this initiative, the Delhi government will fulfill their social aspirations. The schools will provide facilities like good infrastructure having more than 70 classrooms, better playgrounds, and libraries. They will give a definition to government school education."
