When fake Rs 2,000 notes were seized within just weeks of the demonetization drive announcement, it had surprised the security agencies. But an even more surprising recovery was made on Friday, when reportedly for the first time, the Special Cell of Delhi Police came across counterfeit notes of Rs 100 denomination.

After demonetization, the demand for Rs 100 notes increased dramatically and the counterfeit note racketeers seem to be exploiting this development. Sources said the recovered notes were of such fine quality that it was extremely difficult to tell them apart from the real currency.

Two persons were arrested in this regard and Rs 6 lakh in fake Rs 100 notes was recovered from their possession. Police are now investigating if the Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) were pumped in during the Uttar Pradesh (UP) elections as the arrested duo had travelled to the eastern part of the state more than 20 times in the last two months. Sources revealed that the notes came to India through Pakistan via Nepal.

“Accused Sanjeev alias Mukesh, 31, and Arvin, 35, hail from the Shamli district in UP. Sanjeev has been involved in the racket for the last two to three years whereas Arvin joined in just a few months ago. The duo was arrested from outer Delhi’s Sonia Vihar in the early hours of Friday. The main supplier is an eastern UP-based man, who receives the currency from Pakistan via Nepal,” Special Cell DCP Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said.

The police had launched a drive against counterfeit notes a few weeks ago after fake currency of Rs 2,000 denomination, amounting to nearly 19 lakh, was seized. The latest arrest was made in continuation of the said drive. The cops also seized a Santro car bearing a Haryana number plate.

Sources said Sanjeev and Arvin had come to the Capital to deliver the fake notes to some buyers. Arvin’s bag had Rs 2 lakh while Sanjeev had Rs 4 lakh. They charged Rs 40,000 for Rs 100,000 fake currency.

A case under appropriate sections of the law has been registered and further probe is on. More people may get arrested soon, police said.
