Mind your language, rather accent! This is what Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel are busy doing these days. Around 250 of them, who will be deployed at the Heritage Line of the Delhi Metro starting May-end, are expected to reply in American and British accents to tourists, who are expected to frequent the four-station-long stretch connecting the Metro to tourist spots in Old Delhi.
However, the complicated nature of these accents, have left most security personnel confused. “Where do you want to go?” becomes “Weyjoo wona go” (in an American accent) has unsurprisingly got most CISF men’s tongue in a twist.
One of the jawans, who is undergoing the training, said that he and others have done a qualifying course in English during their induction. “However this is different. We’ve been taught American accent, T+Y = CH and D+Y = J. “Would you help me?’ becomes ‘Wujoo help me?’
“It is difficult but we are trying. It’s a good practice. We have a teacher and we take notes,” he said.
The reason for this exercise is that the much-awaited Heritage Line is expected to attract a huge number of international tourists as the line will pass through some of the most famous sites such as Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Red Fort and Kashmere Gate.
“We need to provide a more pleasing and accessible profile to our foreign guests. This is why a special training in manners and etiquette has been arranged. Also, they are being made to learn to speak and understand American and British accents. This will help them communicate with tourists easily and attend to any emergency quickly,” said a senior CISF officer.
The officer added that commandos are also being trained to understand the latest navigation apps like Delhi Metro mobile app, Indian Railways app and others.
