Islamic State sympathiser arrested at Delhi airport claims he was 'raising funds for refugees'

The man also claimed to have collected Rs 25 lakh for Rohingya refugees in 2017 in Bangladesh

An sympathiser for the Islamic State (IS) who was arrested at the Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport last week, has claimed he was trying to raise funds to help IS refugees and facilitate their rehabilitation.

The man also claimed to have collected Rs 25 lakh for Rohingya refugees in 2017 in Bangladesh. Agencies, however, suspect this to be a terror-funding module and a motive behind the fund collection is being probed. The man was identified as Mohammad Shadeek, a permanent resident of Bikaner in Rajasthan.

The suspect had arrived at the immigration counter in terminal 3 of the Delhi airport for clearance to board a Jet Airways flight – 9W-554 to Doha, Qatar. Following his detention he was jointly interrogated by the sleuths of Intelligence Bureau and Delhi Police's special cell and was later taken to city office of Delhi Police Special Branch, a senior officer had then said.
