Citing Delhi’s unexplored potential as a tourist hub for its citizens, recently appointed Law Minister Kapil Mishra, who has also been given charge of the Department of Tourism Delhi, is working on plans to revive the interest in the city’s melting pot of culture.

Speaking with iamin, Kapil Mishra said, “Whenever the weather is pleasant, the citizens of Delhi flock to India Gate. Because they don’t have or are unaware of other options.” He added, “We need to create new avenues for entertainment for people of Delhi. For this, we need a mission-based approach. My officials are already working on a policy to create a brand for the city. In fact, I want to be known more as a Tourism Minister than a Law Minister,” he said.

So far the Tourism department has only been selling liquor with some ‘Hop-on, hop-off’ buses. When asked if the Department of Tourism is mere tokenism, the minister responded, “It is not tokenism. People don’t realize the potential of this ministry. We build armies, not only to protect citizens but also to protect our heritage, art and culture to transfer it to the next generation.”

The Minister is also going to appoint a Chairman for the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) under the Tourism ministry. “Generally these appointments take political leaders. But, we are now looking for a corporate leader, someone who would like to give his time and energy to make Delhi a better tourist destination,” the minister revealed.
