“The Delhi Metro has been a real success story. It is a case study that has set benchmarks for others in the country. Its contribution to the national capital is invaluable and, we all recognise it,” said cabinet secretary PK Sinha in his address during a conference, themed ‘Indian Metros: Collaborating for Excellence’, at Metro Bhawan on Thursday.

Sinha also launched ‘I-Metros’, an association of all Indian Metro Rail companies which will be a forum to exchange ideas, knowledge pool and share experiences, best practices, innovations, etc among the Indian Metro rail companies to nurture excellence in performance.

Speaking at the event, he said, “The Prime Minister himself suggested that all Metros that are coming up in the country should share their experiences and best practices. ‘I – Metros’ will go a long way if it progresses in the right way in terms of sharing of best practices and adoption of the latest technologies.”

The objective of I-Metros, which will be registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860, is to  not only provide a common platform to  all Metro rail companies, but also undertake and promote techno-economic studies and research. It will safeguard the interest and rights of metro rail companies and will be resource tank of information for decision making.

The Cabinet Secretary also released ‘The Operator’s Story’- a publication by World Bank and Railway and Transport Strategy Centre (RTSC), Imperial College London, on findings of the research on ‘What makes Metros successful’. The research takes evidence from long-term benchmarking and 10 in-depth case studies of worldwide Metro operators and has been conducted at the request of Government of India. The report gives guidance to Metro developers and operators on what drives its long-term success and sustainability, considering the train’s physical characteristics, planning and design, and its funding and financial framework.

Meanwhile, in his address secretary in Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs DS Mishra said, “The government came up with a new Metro policy last year that is going to pave way for creating an ecosystem for rapid development of Metro systems in the country.”
