House help jumps off window, dies in Karol Bagh area

Police said that Avinash Bhalla, in his sixties is a businessman. At the time of the incident, his wife was not at home. She had gone to stay with their children abroad.

A 30-year-old domestic help died after she jumped from the window of the second floor while trying to escape from robbers, who had held her employer hostage in Central Delhi's Karol Bagh area on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Geeta. The incident took place at the Park Lane Road, opposite the Ajmal Khan Park on Deshbandhu Gupta Road area, when five robbers armed with weapons barged into the house of an elderly man.

Police said that Avinash Bhalla, in his sixties is a businessman. At the time of the incident, his wife was not at home. She had gone to stay with their children abroad.

"The incident took place when Bhalla was at home with a male servant. As per his statement, at around 12.40 am, five robbers forcefully entered Bhalla's house, located on the second floor and tied him and a male servant to a chair. A few minutes later, Geeta, another help, entered the house. Since the complainant and his help were tied in his room, Geeta spotted them and the robbers. She raised an alarm after which the five men ran towards her," said a senior police officer.

The victim, Geeta then ran to a bathroom and hid there. The men were standing outside the door, police said.

"As per our preliminary investigation, we believe that the woman jumped from the window of the bathroom either out of fear or thinking that she will call for help from the neighbours. Bhalla, on the other hand, heard the commotion and started raising an alarm. The five robbers saw Geeta lying on the ground and fearing that they would be caught, fled from the spot," said a senior police officer Geeta was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died due to head injuries.

Police said that they have registered a case under sections 392 (Punishment for robbery), 394 ( Voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) , 452 ( House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) and 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Police said that they are scanning the CCTV cameras of the area as well as of the building to identify the five men.
