Wednesday began on a good note for 55-year-old Rizvaan Ahmed and his family, but their happiness did not last long. Hours after celebrating the birth of their granddaughter they ended up performing her last rites. The girl child was born at 1:45pm on Wednesday at Delhi government's Jag Pravesh Chandra hospital, but developed breathing complications and needed to be on ventilator. The family was referred to a 'higher center' and the child was taken to three major hospitals in the city, all of which refused to admit her and the child died due to lack of assistance/equipment.

"At around 10 am on Wednesday we took our daughter-in-law to Shastri Park hospital where she delivered a baby with some breathing complications, the child was incubated but the hospital asked us to take her to a better/higher hospital," said Ahmed, who does small jobs as a daily wager.

"From 3 pm till midnight, we were looking for a place for assistance and moved from one hospital to other, but all refused due to lack of beds. I even made a complaint at Anti-Corruption at 1031, but even they kept giving false assurances. In the end, we returned to Jag Pravesh past midnight where the baby died at 4 am," he adds.

Ahmed with his son first took the little one to Lok Nayak Hospital where due to non-availability of beds, he was refused an admit. The child was then taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and then to Chacha Nehru, but the same answer was repeated everywhere. At Chacha Nehru, Rizvaan alleges that the doctor misbehaved with the family and almost pushed them out without any consideration. While the child's condition deteriorated, the mother was at the Jag Pravesh Hospital unaware of the entire ordeal.
