Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have alleged that the only woman doctor was alive even after an hour of the accident at the Yamuna Expressway and could have been saved had there been a well-trained patrol team or availability of medical help.

"Tragic for other doctors to be not able to save their friends due to unavailability of equipment. Why cannot we train the security teams on patrolling and equip them with life-saving measures? We should learn from these incidents as after so many years of hard work, we have lost three brains, who could have helped several others," said a senior resident doctor.

The 25-year-old woman from Yamuna Nagar in Haryana had joined others to celebrate their senior resident Dr Harshad Wankhede's birthday, after completing their shift in the Department of Emergency.

Sitting in the center of the back seat of the seven-seater Toyota Innova, Himbala was thrown in the front when the car rammed into the truck and got hit on the chest. Her four friends, who were injured, saw her die after fighting for life for an hour.

The four injured doctors – Catherine Halam, Mahesh Kumar, Jitender Mourya, and Abhinava Singh – were first taken to a private hospital for treatment and are now recovering at the Jai Prakash Narayan Trauma Center, AIIMS.

"Deep condolences on the untimely and unfortunate demise of young resident doctors. A team has been constituted to provide care to the injured and assistance to the family members of resident doctors," said Dr Randeep Guleria, Medical Director, AIIMS.
