Pollution at the national capital touched unprecedented levels on Tuesday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) registering a hazardous 999 on the PM (Pollutant Matter) 10 index at the National Institute of Malaria Research in Dwarka.

Delhi has notoriously been counted among the most polluted cities in the world, with matters becoming worse in November due to the smog. Other areas were as hard to breathe in as the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium registered an AQI of 752, and ITO hit 998.

Environmentalist Subir Dey blamed the sudden rise in pollution to increased humidity. “Moisture tends to trap more pollutants,” he said. “The dust storms and rains changed the weather which has led to rising pollutant matter.”
