Babu Lal Nagar got a new lease on life with the quick action by the doctors at the BLK Hospital recently. When the doctors got to know of a healthy heart available in Jaipur, they flew to get it without wasting any time. With proper coordination, the heart reached in time and the man was operated upon successfully.

The 56-year-old got a heart transplant several months after he was put on the transplant list for cardiomyopathy, a condition which causes the heart muscles to weaken. He was brought to the hospital first in July last year when the doctors put a special pacemaker in him. But by October, the pacemaker stopped helping him and he had several bouts of black-outs despite being on medication.

"Nagar came to us very sick and needed a heart soon. When we got to know of the available heart, we asked him to be ready and left for Jaipur to harvest the heart. Without failing any time and thanks to the cooperation of medical staff at the medical college in Jaipur and police personnel, we were able to bring it back in time and operate the patient here," said Dr Ajay Kaul, Chairman and Head of Department, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), BLK Super Speciality Hospital.

A green corridor was created from the IGI Airport to BLK Super Speciality Hospital covering a distance of 15 km in just over 17 minutes at night. The heart was transplanted late into the night starting at 12:45 am. It took a total of two hours and 45 minutes for the doctors to transplant the heart.
