A 49-year-old Delhi Police head constable was mysteriously shot dead on Tuesday at Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberculosis (RBIPMT) in north Delhi's GTB Nagar area where he was deployed to guard a prisoner undergoing treatment. Police said the cop was found dead following a gunshot sound, but whether he was murdered or committed suicide, is yet to be ascertained.

The incident took place around 3:30 pm in the hospital ward that was bolted from inside with prisoner Manoj and the head constable, identified as Rajender. He is survived by his wife and two children, including a daughter whose wedding is scheduled on February 25.

Manoj was arrested in 2013 by the Delhi Police for a murder case. He was serving his term in Tihar Jail since then and was admitted to the hospital on February 8.

Prima facie, the police suspect it to be a suicide and a probe has been started to ascertain the exact sequence of events that led to the incident. Police are trying to find out if Rajender was depressed as people known to him said he had not been able to arrange dowry for his daughter.

It was also not clear whether Rajender allegedly killed himself with his service pistol or the prisoner shot him dead.

Aslam Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest), said Rajender was posted in the 3rd battalion. He was deployed at the RBIPMT with assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Sita Ram to guard the prisoner.

Around 3 pm, ASI Sita Ram told the police that as he went out to bring tea, the head constable bolted the ward's door from inside. The prisoner has told the police that he was sleeping when the ASI left. "Manoj has claimed that he woke up after hearing a gunshot and found Rajender on the floor. He raised an alarm," said a police officer.

The DCP said the head constable was rushed to Sushruta Trauma Centre where he succumbed to the bullet injury. "We will speak with Rajender's family members to find out if he was under any stress," he said.
