Farhat Jabi, 25, from UP’s Ballai lost an eye after doctors at Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Delhi gave her wrong injection and also forgot to inform her about the same.

She was one of the 20 patients who were injected with a contaminated medicine at the hospital. But other patients received further treatment at AIIMS and are now recovering.

Jabi’s left eye got severely injured three years ago after her abusive, violent husband hit her, resulting in blurred vision.

On April 1, Jabi was given Avastin injection at the GTB Hospital. The medicine is used to prevent blindness due to aging, diabetes, hypertension, and rupturing of blood vessels.

Soon after being injected, Jabi fell unconscious. She was later sent home and was asked to visit for a follow-up. The next day, even though she kept complaining of excruciating pain and a dark spot in her eye, she was sent back after a routine check-up and asked to visit on April 7.

While the family waited for the next check-up, Jabi’s pain, nausea, and blindness kept on increasing. By April 7, she had lost all vision in her left eye.

Meanwhile, Rama Nand Sharma, one of the patients who received surgery at AIIMS, said:  “The hospital is refusing to return the last OPD papers, which have the doctor’s prescription of the medicine.”

“The entire GTB hospital is responsible for those who suffered. We have analysed the issue and taken systematic action. Good care is being provided to these people,” GTB hospital Director Dr Sunil Kumar said.

The Delhi government’s Health Department has now sought a report from the hospital regarding the negligent incident and its consequences.
