A Greater Noida-based RTI activist, Nirmal Kumar has claimed to have alarmed the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority and the District Administration of Gautam Buddh Nagar through the Jansunwai Portal about the rampant illegal construction in the Shah Beri area in February, but no concrete action had been taken.

Kumar said that weeks after the complaint, he received a letter from the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority which read, "The Authority takes punitive action against illegal construct time to time and also registers cases against offenders under section 10 of Uttar Pradesh Industrial Area Development Law 1976."

While the official enquiry might only reveal the actual cause of this avoidable tragedy but if the complaints made by Kumar had been paid heed to, Tuesday's incident could be avoided. This also raises staggering questions on the administration's role to check the menace of illegal high-rises in the area.

Despite repeated attempts, the Greater Noida Authority did not respond for a comment.

4 ARRESTED

An FIR against 24 people have been registered and four people have been arrested so far under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 388 (extortion by threat of accusation of an offence punishable with death or imprisonment for life).
